BREAKFAST SEMINAR

Our first Breakfast Seminar was held on 30 August at the Ecology Centre preceding our AGM. Although attendance was low it was a very enlightening and interesting talk and we hope that more will be able to attend our next event. Any feedback is very welcome.

Luke Sweedman presented:

“In the Footsteps of Surveyor Robert Austin’s 1854 Expedition East to the Western Australian Wheatbelt and North to the Murchison Goldfields”

The Robert Austin Expedition of 1854 provided the inspiration for the journey which was undertaken by; Luke Sweedman, the plant collector for Kings Park; Steve Hopper, the Director of Kew Gardens; Rod Garlett a local Northam aboriginal and employee of the DEC; Rhian Smith, a researcher and Nathan McQuoid, a Western Australian ecologist. A fine selection of photographs featuring places visited by the original Robert Austin party were shown. Luke Sweedman spoke about their travels, following the path of the earlier expedition from Northam through the north-eastern Wheatbelt. Robert Austin’s party named such places as Mt Magnet, Mt Luke, Mt Narryer and Mt Farmer and was the first to discover the night parrot. Luke and his colleagues found some new populations of rare plants as well as recording several sites of significance for aboriginal people. Their trip covered around 2000 kms over 11 days in a four wheel drive whereas Austin’s trip took 4 months covering around 4000 kms on horseback. Many areas of the route had been altered by clearing for wheat, but large areas remain in their original state.

AGM 2011 Report

At our recent AGM a new Management Committee was formed with Geoff Cockerton returned as Chairman, David Venning as Vice Chair, Luke Sweedman as Secretary and Markus Mikli as Treasurer. Also continuing on the Committee are Sam Atkinson and Joe Grehan. We would also like to welcome new to the Committee Bill Davey of Plantation & Landcare Services and Tracey Widdup of Bushland Native Seed Supply. It is always great to have input from new faces.

Special thanks to outgoing Committee members Murray Penter and Linda Thomson for all their past support. Despite busy work commitments our Committee put a lot of time and effort into the running and development of RIAWA.

The first Breakfast Seminar will be held on Tuesday 30 September 8.30am with Luke Sweedman from the Botanic Gardens & Parks Authority giving a presentation on:
“In the Footsteps of Surveyor Robert Austin’s 1854 Expedition East to the West Australian Wheatbelt and North to the Murchison Goldfieds”

All welcome – free to members, $10 non-members.

Held in the Tamala Room at the WA Ecology Centre: 165 Perry Lakes Drive Floreat.

This will be followed by our AGM at 10am – all members are encouraged to attend. The new Committee will then hold a Committee meeting to close 12pm.

RIAWA will be commencing a series of Breakfast Seminars in the next few months with a guest speaker providing a talk on a revegetation topic. The date for the first seminar will appear on the website soon.

Industry Meetings

RIAWA will be meeting with both Main Roads WA and The Department of Environment & Conservation within the next month as part of their regular industry liaison process. Members who have particluar issues which they would like discussed/raised at these meetings are invited to send these through to Delia Baldock, our Administration Officer, as soon as possible.

New RIAWA Committee

At the recent AGM a new RIAWA Committee was elected.

Geff Cockerton is serving another term as Chairperson and David Venning is the Vice Chair. Luke Sweedman will continue as Secretary with Markus Mikli as Treasurer. Committee members are Sam Atkinson, Linda Thomson, Murray Penter and Joe Grehan.

We would like to welcome the two new members Murray and Joe on board and pass on many thanks to David Merritt and Dan Huxtable for their hard work in contributing to the business of the Association during the period of their membership. We certainly would like to welcome them back on to the committee at any time in the future.

RIAWA is solely dependent on the free time and effort put in by the voluntary committee members. We share a common goal to improve the quality and standards of revegetation work carried out across the West Australian landscape and encourage any interested persons to nominate for future committee membership.

Seed Accreditation

The RIAWA committee have recently completed a workshop together with industry stakeholders developing the draft structure for a formal accreditation process. This is a huge task and will require a lot of on-going work to complete. It is hoped that later in the year a draft format will be published on the web site for public comment. Stay tuned.

Planning conservation to achieving restoration

You might be interested in this conference to be held by the Australian Network for Plant Conservation Inc (ANPC) on 28 September to 1 October 2010. This is a conference for everyone involved in conserving Australia’s unique flora and native vegetation. The conference is in Perth but there are also field trips organised – for more information please go to the ANPC website: www.anpc.asn.au/conferences/2010/

Revegetation Information Sought

Could anyone recommend some texts or sources with technical information regarding revegetation species? Examples of the sort of information sought include: typical soil types that species are associated with; establishment difficulties such as B. prionotes not liking high P soils; and vegetation associations.
